Modern academic sociology began with the study of religion in Emile Durkheim’s 1897 The Study of Suicide in which he explored the differing suicide rates among Protestants and Catholics. Following Durkheim, Karl Marx and Max Weber also looked at religion’s role and influence in other social institutions such as economics and politics.
This book helps explain some of Max Weber’s key concepts such as charisma, asceticism, mysticism, pariah-people, prophets, salvation, and theodicy and places them within the context of Weber’s sociology of religion.
My aim is to introduce Weber and Marx as classic thinkers in the sociology of religion, and thus it does not touch on the many other topics with which Marx and Weber concerned themselves.

Preface T he sociology of religion, and more specifically, Max Weber’s sociology of religion, has been the focus of much of my scholarly research for almost a decade and a half.
Sociology of religion Secularization Secularization has been predicted for decades by various sociologists including the three founding fathers; Durkheim, Marx and Weber. The term secular refers to being without religion, in the UK for example; we have a secular democracy as opposed to countries such as; Iran who mix both religion and state.
In his sociology of religion Weber connects it with the anthropological debate of the turn of the century on magic and religion, especially the debate on pre-animism initiated by R. R. Marett, and uses it as an alternative for concepts like mana or orenda.
